Happy weekend, my friends! We are on our way to our final stop, but before that, I want to show you this beautiful and exotic little island off the coast of Fujian, one of the closest spot from mainland China to Taiwan. A good swimmer can swim his/her way from here to Taiwan, according to our tour guide. This island is Gulangyu Island, a.k.a. Piano Island, for over 700 pianos resides there, one of the highest density per square mile in the world. There are five main attractions on the island, we chose only one of them because that is all the boys could handle. 😉 Sunlight Peak is the tallest spot of the entire island, from where one could look afar, of all the commercial ships passing by, and the beautiful plantation beneath. If you stay overnight on the island, I’d imagine this would be your top choice for watching sunrise.
One of my favorite part of the Piano Island was the allies leading up to the Sunlight Peak. They are lined with stone walls with draping vines, the roads are also covered with stones. After the thunderstorm, it felt especially refreshing walking on these streets while admiring ancient ficus trees and private gardens along the way.
The boys favorite part was the streets concentrated with small specialty shops. They ran from one to another to collect shop’s stamp, another island tradition. From what we could see, this island is a perfect escape from busy city life. It has beach, gardens, small mountain, historical homes, shops and eateries, and of course, B&Bs and restaurants. One thing we noticed, is that majority of the visitors are young locals, I guess that is a sign this island is a real leisure place rather than a tourist town. 🙂
Thank you very much for reading! See you in the next city, next post!
