How To Style Neutrals

Hello, my dear friends, how is your summer so far? We’ve had a month-long 90F weather, I feel I am wilting like the vegetables in my garden! In the blogsphere, everyone is blooming in floral prints and sun dresses, but there is an undeniable trend that has been slowing taking over the style scene: neutrals, especially all shades of brown, from beige to dark chocolate.

In my recent styling work done with Farfetch, I took on the neutral trend and styled a semi-formal look with one of the emerging fashion labels, A.W.A.K.E. Mode. You can read more about my take on the minimalist designer label and styling inspirations in this Farfetch editorial, in today’s post, I want to highlight my no-fail tips on neutrals styling.

Neu·tral /ˈn(y)o͞otrəl/, a neutral color or shade, especially light gray or beige. Often when we mentioned the word neutral, images of minimal, androgynous styles come to mind. In fact, neutrals are just the color, the style can be as feminine and romantic as you want. My favorite way to make a fashion statement with these muted hues is increase volume, either through repetition of the same color, i.e. a monochromatic look, or grouping of similar shades together to form a tonal look. My look today is a monochromatic one with a focus on texture play: the smooth satin, rough silk raffta, and velvety quilted vegan leather. There is also a sub-element of print mix but overall, the mix of texture makes the whole look interesting.

When the outfit color is not an eye-catching one, you can add a pop of color via accessories like the green bag I paired with this all white blazer look:

Another common way to style neutrals is pairing them with dark colors such as black, blue and dark green. as demonstrated by this black and tan leather look. The dark & light color pairings usually are easier to pull off than the dark on dark ones, with blue + espresso being one of the hardest to style IMHO.
